Swimmers, divers start 2025-26 season
The Northampton High School varsity boys swim and dive team started their season on a winning streak with victories over its first three opponents this season. The boys’ team bested East Stroudsburg South in their season home opener, followed by a win over Allentown Central Catholic on Thursday, Dec. 11, and Pocono Mountain West just Tuesday evening.
The results of the start of this season have been highlighted by the Northampton’s sweep of first-place finishes against Pocono Mountain West in Tuesday night’s contest. The boys scoring first-place finishes included: Logan Saylor, with a pair of first-place wins in the 100 Yard Freestyle and 100 Yard Breaststroke, and Josiah Hippert, also with dual wins in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. Additionally, Henry Schoenberger took first in the 200 individual medley, Tobias Scott took first in the 500 freestyle, Nicholas Isaac was first in the 100 backstroke, and Joseph Kennedy was first to the wall in the 200 freestyle event.
“I’m happy with how the team is performing,” commented Northampton head coach Cullen Mentzell. “Many of the swimmers are back to the times they ended last season with, which is a great sign.”
The Northampton girls team has experienced a slower start to this season after graduating many swimmers from the squad last year.
This year‘s team is comprised of several new-to-the-team or new-to-the-sport swimmers, and as Coach Mentzell conveyed, “our new members are working hard and making great progress. They’ve learned a lot, and they continue to get better each meet.”
While the girls’ team did not secure a win in Tuesday night’s competition, there were several noteworthy swims to highlight, including an excellent performance from freshman Gabriella Medina, who claimed victories in the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle events. Jai Bermudez was first to the wall in the 50 freestyle, Liz Sponsler was first in the 200 individual medley, and Amelia Sommons took first place in the 100 backstroke.
In their last meet before the holiday break, Northampton will welcome Parkland High School for a home meet on Tuesday, Dec. 23, at 4 p.m. in the Gwen Whildin Memorial Natatorium at Northampton Middle School.
