Milia second for LHS

Liberty came home with a top 10 finish at the Penn Manor tournament over the weekend.

The Hurricanes finished eighth in the team standings and had two medalists at the event with Max Milia leading the way with a runner-up finish at 107 pounds.

Milia lost to Luca Butera of Norwin 10-5 in Saturday’s finals, but it was a good run for the freshman lightweight in his varsity tournament.

“Max is a mature and resilient young man who is very coachable,” said head coach Brandon Hall. “His discipline on the mat is equal to his discipline in the classroom. I know he is frustrated he didn’t finish on the top of the podium but there were a lot of positives to take from this weekend.”

Elijah Heimbach also placed for the ‘Canes, taking seventh at 121 with a 20-4 tech fall (3:39) over Carter Reyes of Penn Manor.

“Elijah was also disappointed where he finished, but he is also determined to improve in a few areas as he works towards his postseason goals,” said Hall. “He is much improved with his focus and approach to practice compared to previous years.”

Liberty was close to having other wrestlers medal, but many fell in their final bout before getting to the medal round.

“Given our lack of experience and prestige, many of our kids did not get great seeds, but competed well despite where they started,” Hall said. “Eight kids were in the top 12 but frustratingly lost that match to place. That’s something we must improve upon as a team. I think we are well conditioned and the team has the right approach mentally. Both will serve them well throughout the season.”

The Hurricanes (2-0) have matches against Pocono Mountain East and West to close out their action before hosting the Bethlehem Holiday Classic on Dec. 28 and 29.

Freedom (3-1) knocked off East Stroudsburg South 43-27 in their only action of the week and face Northwestern this week before gearing up for the Holiday Classic.
