Girls wrestling tops Eagles

Wrestling coaches preach to wrestle the full 6 minutes and during their dual meet with Nazareth the Kids’ Ava Jagielski showed why as she scored a fall with 2 seconds left in her match to erase a 10-4 deficit and score the clinching points in a 42-33 Northampton win over the Blue Eagles.

“I really didn’t want to lose because I know that Nazareth is a very big opponent. And I just needed to get her on her back and…I really don’t know what happened. I just blinked and then I was on top of her and I just tried to hold my weight on her and get her down,” explained the freshman.

Jagielski’s pin evened the match at 30, but Northampton knew it would receive forfeits in 2 of the last 3 bouts, so the win put a possible Blue Eagles’ comeback out of reach.

There were other heroes on the night for the K-Kids.

In the opening bout, Juliana Noe trailed 2-0 going into the final period, but she scored a reversal and pin in 21 seconds to give a swing of 9 team points right out of the gate.

Northampton scored three straight pins from 118 to 130 to surge in front after Nazareth had taken a 12-6 lead.

Junior Taylor Sipel scored a first period fall at 118. Freshman Marissa Fogel stayed undefeated on the season with a dominant riding performance that resulted in a pin in 5:06. Senior Gabi Chevere scored takedowns in the first and second periods before punishing her opponent’s decision to take bottom in the third period.

Chevere, one of the pioneers from the first season of girls wrestling described the changes she has witnessed, “The girls are constantly evolving. There are a lot of new girls starting and things are always changing, but in a good way. It’s not just the wrestling side, it’s the community side too.”

Head coach Joe Tocci shared his thoughts after the competition, “They beat us at heavyweight last year to win a very exciting match. We knew this was going to be tough, but the girls had a great week of practice. And showed because they really wrestled, well wrestled hard. And Ava, a huge pin for there at the end really saved the match for us.”
