Boys building off successful summer
For the Northampton boys’ basketball team, it is about continuing to build.
The Konkrete Kids won the East Penn Conference (EPC) title last season, marking their first league EPC crown and first league title since they won the Mountain Valley Conference in 1973. Northampton lost to Parkland in the District 11 Class 6A championship game, hoping to get their first district title since 1972.
With heir rotation back in the fold this season, the Kids worked this summer to solidify their base. The Kids made it to the finals of the high school league this summer but opted out of playing against Parkland in the finals because of a scheduling conflict in the Allentown Throwdown Tournament. In that tournament, the Kids would fall to the Trojans in the semifinals 35-33 in overtime.
It was a successful summer season, and one that seems to have laid the groundwork for the start of their winter season.
Head coach Matt Scholl recognized a strengthening bond.
“After dropping our second game of the summer, our group really turned a corner and responded the right way. We’re got off to a strong start at the Albright Team Camp and played with good energy and togetherness,” Scholl said back after the summer seasons ended. “Overall, the focus for us this summer has been on strengthening our chemistry, getting stronger in the weight room, and continuing to develop our depth.”
Scholl was impressed with the play of Brady Simock, Noah Walakovits, Leo Regec, Ethan Raphun, Korbin Sollars and Jake Raysely, all of whom saw significant playing time last season as well as the summer.
Even back in the summer, Simock anchored the Kids on both ends and showing great leadership, according to Scholl. Walakovits continued to score the ball at a high level and played all aspects of the game, Scholl said. Regec knocked down threes at a high clip and Raphun, Sollars, and Raysely were key contributors, according to Scholl.
Scholl said the squad further jelled and turn the corner in the fall toward the regular season.
The team did a few fall shootouts, according to Scholl, and really ramped things up for winter back in September.
“We have our top 6 back from last year,” Scholl said.
The boys started the season 6-0 at the time of this writing, and were set for a big showdown against Parkland on Tuesday on the road.
