LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Liberty boys leading the way early on

Liberty has shown themselves to be the cream of the crop on the Bethlehem hardwood this winter.

The Hurricanes (3-1) were off to an undefeated start before falling to Dallas over the weekend 54-44.

Head coach Nigel Long was happy with the start to the year, despite to road loss over the weekend.

“Early in this season we’ve played four games in seven days,” said Long. “We have a lot of work to do and we look forward to a week full of practice to improve as a team.”

The Hurricanes were tied at 26 with Dallas at halftime, but hit a dry spell in the third quarter, only scoring two points in the decisive frame to dig a hole they couldn’t climb out of.

Jarrell Teague and Dylan Bilger led the team with 10 points each. Jake Pukszyn scored six in the loss on an off night, as he needs 15 more points to reach 1,000 for his career.

The Hurricanes have a quieter week on tap with games against Pleasant Valley on Tuesday and Northampton on Friday.

“We want to extend our bench and create depth over the course of the season,” said Long of what he wants to see from the team moving forward. “We have so much to improve on. Our turnover numbers are one of the many areas of improvement for our team. However, our team’s energy has been great each day. Our kids are working hard which is always important.”

Bethlehem Catholic (2-2) is still searching for their first league win of the season. The Hawks two wins are against nonleague opponents, as they beat Academy Park 73-58 on Saturday to even their mark.

The Hawks have Pocono Mountain West, Nazareth and Crestwood this week.

Freedom (0-5) are still searching for their first win of the season, as the inexperienced Pates are working through growing pains.

The Pates have Pocono Mountain East and Easton this week.
