There’s a new face in Freedom’s wrestling room with Tyler Greene taking over as head coach this season.
The Pates are coming off an 11-6 season a year ago and Greene inherits a young squad that is determined to make headway towards the second half of the season.
“Our team composition is very different from last year,” said Greene, who comes over from Easton. “Shifting from a strong and experienced upperclassmen group last year to a group of mostly underclassmen and new wrestlers, with a few veterans sprinkled in this year.”
Returning wrestlers this year include Michael Messa (So., 127); Samuel Kurtz (So., 139); Anthony Crisafulli, (Sr., 145); Nicholas Lyden (Jr., 152) and Daniel Schiffert (Sr., 285).
Lyden took fifth last year at districts and Schiffert was a district champion, regional runner-up and state qualifier.
Newcomers are freshmen Jack Scanlan (114), Shane Getz (121) and Marvin Rodriguez (170).
“We expect to see big improvements from our underclassmen and new wrestlers, with strong leadership from our veterans,” Greene said. “We’re focused on establishing a brand of tough, gritty wrestling, and doing everything right, leading to success on the mat. Our team goal is to simply get better every competition.”
Freedom split two matches on Nov. 29, falling to Stroudsburg 44-29 and beating Wilson 57-16. On Dec. 3 they knocked off East Stroudsburg North 53-21. They traveled to Pleasant Valley on Dec. 10.
Nick Lyden is one of several returning wrestlers for the Pates.
