Girls are off to 2-0 start this year

Posting wins in their first two games, Catasauqua’s girls’ basketball team has been pleased, but they are not satisfied.

The Rough Riders had impressive wins over Bangor (44-32) and Southern Lehigh (49-24).

“We got wins, but we are nowhere near where I think we should be,” offered girls’ head coach Tara Belfield. “We forced Bangor into turning the ball over 22 times and still only scored 44 points.

“We had too many missed layups, and if we were not able to push the ball, it felt like our offense got stagnant. We have to work on scoring in our set offenses.”

Belfield was impressed with her team responding despite senior Hailey Jenkins being slowed with an injury, as well as sophomore Kaylin Stewart’s play.

“On the positive we have won both games without Hailey being Hailey,” added Belfield. “She was quiet in both games. Kaylin, being our only true post player, has really had to battle under the basket and she is doing a great job. Against Southern Lehigh, she had 17 points, but more impressive 21 rebounds.”

Jenkins has liked what she has seen in the first two games. She also expects to be back at full strength soon.

“It feels really good to get off to a 2-0 start,” beamed Jenkins. “I couldn’t be more proud of the team and what we put out on the court these past two games, especially for it being this early in the season. Obviously there are things that need to be worked on, but overall our team chemistry is flowing.

“Personally I think I could have executed some things better on my part, but that’s expected since I missed about a week of practice due to a hamstring injury. I’m just excited and grateful to be back and I know I’ll play how I feel I should in no time.”

Belfield is confident the team can continue to rise throughout the season. The Roughies will be tested this week with a game at Saucon Valley and a home game against Northwestern.

“Some of the other girls are still finding their footing offensively but defensively they have all really stepped up,” stressed Belfield. “Sophomores Sarina Sankari and Jessica Mankos have done a great job getting their hands on everything and Freshman Javaeha Lafond has looked fantastic at the top of our 3-2 zone with her length.

“We will continue to work hard.”
