Boys roll by DHS in hoops
Just one minute and 48 seconds into their game against Dieruff last Thursday, the Northampton boys basketball team led 11-0. Projected over a full 32-minute game, the final score would have been 195-0.
Of course, that ludicrous score did not occur, but nevertheless the K-Kids closed the first period up 18-2 and the margin was never closer than those 16 points the rest of the way as they trounced the Huskies 57-30.
“It was good to see us come out a lot better than we did the other night against Easton, which we were trying to push them to do. We need to be consistent with that, jump come out from the jump and play better, like we’re capable of,” affirmed head coach Matt Scholl.
In this game, the fast start was literally from the jump as Jake Raysley corralled the opening tip and took to the hoop and was fouled for an and-one 6 seconds into the game.
The main difference between the teams in the early going was ball security. Northampton pressed the Huskies relentlessly and forced 8 first-period turnovers and 20 for the game. The Kids’ defense also held Dieruff to a meager 11 of 35 shooting from the floor.
“I actually asked them before the game, ‘What do you want to do? Do you want to press?’ and they said, ‘Let’s go!’. We’ve got seniors. We’ve done everything. We’ve played 10 different defenses at this point,” Scholl explained.
The Kids continued their winning ways by downing Bangor and East Stroudsburg North to remain undefeated at 4-0.
This week, the K-Kids have two huge road games sandwiched around a home game against East Stroudsburg South on Saturday. Friday night they go to Liberty and Tuesday they are at Parkland with a chance to avenge the district playoff loss that ended their season last year.
