Becahi aims for another state title

Bethlehem Catholic is kings of wrestling in Pennsylvania at the moment and they enter this season with that mile-long bull’s-eye on their back again.

The Hawks have won the last four team state championships and are looking for a five-peat this season.

“In a nutshell we are young, naive and talented,” said third-year head coach Mike Cole. “The season will be fun. Our youthfulness gives us opportunity to develop and build for high level competitions. As they learn to train at a high level, we could significantly improve over the course of the season.”

The Hawks are led by three-time state champion, senior Keanu Dillard (139/145), as he looks to sweep the competition with another gold medal this year.

Sophomore Nico Emili (114/121) is the only other state medalist back on the roster, after taking seventh in Hershey a year ago.

Other returning wrestler this season include AJ Gomez (So., 121); Reef Dillard (Jr., 133); Andre Cerrato (So., 139/145); Jaden Santiago (So., 152); Mason Thomas (Jr., 172) and Connor Gillahan (Jr., 189).

“We are getting Zach Papcsy (Jr., 160) back from a two-year injury and Grant Mulhern (Sr., HWT) back from A one-year injury too,” said Cole.

Newcomers this year are Michael Nicosia (Fr., 107), Gino Bozzi (Fr., 107), Guisseppe Bozzi (Fr., 114), Messiah Cartagena (Fr., 114), Jack Cole (Fr., 127).

“Many kids have an opportunity to develop significantly across the season,” said Cole of wrestlers to look out for this season. “Mason Thomas and Zack Papcsy excite me the most.”
