PRESS PHOTO COURTESEY OF JOEY HARTMAN-DOWWalkers hit their stride on Main Street, Nazareth, during the 60th annual Christmas Peace Pilgrimage in 2019. This year’s walk is slated for Dec. 13. People making this Christian witness for peace have been making the 10-mile trek from Nazareth to Bethlehem along Route 191 the second Saturday in December for 66 years. Symbolic of the journey of Mary and Joseph, it is the world’s oldest annual peace witness, during which pilgrims seek to reflect the nonviolent life of Jesus Christ and his truth of forgiving love. Walkers will meet in the parking lot at 529 E. Broad St., Bethlehem, with buses leaving promptly at 10:45 a.m. to transport pilgrims to Nazareth Moravian Church. There are two scheduled rest stops with light refreshments at Trinity Lutheran Church, Nazareth and First Baptist Church, Bethlehem, and a candle lighting at College Hill Moravian Church, Bethlehem at 4:30 p.m. A Carol Singing at Payrow Plaza at 5 p.m. will be followed by fellowship, conversation and a simple supper at Christ Church United Church of Christ at 75 E. Market St. at approximately 5:30 p.m. Walkers may join the pilgrimage anywhere along the way, and are encouraged to dress appropriately for the weather – pilgrims walk in sun, wind, rain or snow. Support vehicles – known as shepherds – are available to pick up those who would like assistance for part of the way or a ride back to their vehicles. People may also make a monetary donation to support the financial expenses of the walk, such as bus rental, police escort and food. “Come walk with us this holiday season and discover why one of the reasons Bethlehem is called The Christmas City!” Nancy Johnston, a member of the pilgrimage planning committee who has been involved with the pilgrimage since 1986, said. “Walking the journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem we experience a link to history and becoming pilgrims of peace.” For more information or to register for free visit peacewalk.org/.
