Holiday shop and quilt raffle Dec. 6

The Schnecksville Community Fair is holding a holiday shop and quilt raffle in the banquet hall of the fire company, 4550 Old Packhouse Road, Schnecksville, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 6.

Vendors with handmade crafts and other items will be set up. The quilt drawing will take place 2:30 p.m.

The queen size quilt was made by the Amish in Juniata County.

All proceeds will benefit the Schnecksville Community Fair.

Board member Andrea Semmel-Lazarus reports the fair has a lot of financial obligations which are ongoing. These include utilities, liability insurance and maintenance and repairs of the fair buildings on the fire company property.

Semmel-Lazarus noted the fair is a subsidiary of the Schnecksville Fire Company and has its own officers and board of directors. She said the fair committee takes only a month off following the annual fair in June, then meets every month the remainder of the year.

She said a lot of people do not realize the costs and work involved.

“Entertainment is not cheap,” Semmel-Lazarus said. She said costs for musical groups are $10,000 and up. She observed the community has changed from a rural background to a more developed area.

She noted newcomers may not even be aware of the fair and what it has to offer with food, entertainment, exhibits and agriculture.

Semmel-Lazarus said, “Every year, the bills go up but the revenue goes down. The board is trying their hardest to keep the fair going.”

Tickets for the quilt raffle may be purchased at Thomson’s Meat Market, True Value, Kornfeind’s Market and Heidel Hollow or in the hall the day of the event.
