David Samuel Halteman - awarded Purple Heart
David Samuel Halteman, 79, of Bethlehem, died at home after an 18-month battle with cancer. Born in Bethlehem, he was a son of the late Edward Warren and Grace (Ogle) Halteman. He was the husband of Jane (Letowt) Halteman for 54 years.
He was a 1964 Liberty HS graduate. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration in 1968 at Lycoming College.
He was in the United States Army and trained in Fire Direction Control at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, He was, in 1969, deployed to Vietnam in the 4th Infantry Division, 6/29 Artillery, “A” Battery. He was awarded the Purple Heart and the Army Commendation Medal for Valor.
In 1968, he worked at The Bethlehem Steel Corporation until he was drafted.
He returned to Bethlehem in 1970 and the Bethlehem Steel. He was, for 31 years, an Industrial Analyst, Industrial Engineer, Operations Supervisor at Saucon Mills Division’s Beam Yard, Product Applications Engineer for the Foundry Division, Senior Cost Analyst for the Accounting Department and Senior Financial Analyst for the Coke Ovens Division until 1999.
He was a supervisor of Domestic Parts Sales for the Fuller Company and a product manager for 12 years with Foster Wheeler Corporation, Clinton, New Jersey. He retired for six years and then was a courier for St. Luke’s Hospital.
He was a vice-president of the Indian Valley Appaloosa Club and a past Treasurer of the Lehigh Valley Pointer and Setter Club.
He was a member of the Bethlehem Steel Club.
He was a member and usher at Cathedral of the Nativity and later a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Rebecca Halteman Hower, wife of Todd Hower; two grandchildren, Blake and Sadie Hower; a brother, Edward “Ned” Halteman and his wife, Geraldine (Koch) Halteman; nieces; and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Adam David Halteman.
