NHS golfers had another solid year
Northampton and Whitehall had their golf regular seasons end in different directions, but both teams were pleased with the final outcome.
“It has been a great first season for me with the Northampton golf program,” beamed Doug Fehnel. “It definitely was a change of pace from girls’ volleyball.
“Brian Davies was a great help at the beginning of the season getting me started and Matt Durich, my assistant, has not missed a day. It is great to have awesome people working with you to help the program succeed.”
The Konkrete Kids finished the regular season with an overall 12-4 record and qualified for the East Penn Conference (EPC) playoffs.
Individually, Derek Moyer finished second at the district championships with a 70, and played in the state tournament at Penn State Oct. 21-22. Other golfers were Andrew Eberts, CJ Stumpf, Corbin Miller, and Cooper Fry. Eberts and Fry also qualified for District XI Championships.
“Derek had a nice tournament,” said Fehnel. “He has been in the mix at the top all year in the EPC. He is a great kid and a hard worker at practice and on the course. He is always looking to help out the young golfers as well. I am excited to see how his season finishes up.”
Moyer shot 19-over at states and finished 64th. He shot an 84 on the first day, but came back to better that with a 79 on the second day.
The 3A tournament was won by Carson Kittsley of Fox Chapel who shot a minus-8 (70-66) for a two-day total of 136, which was just ahead of Jack Sacriponte’s (Greater Latrobe) 137. and Charlie Barrickman’s (Unionville) 138.

At Whitehall, head coach George Cowitch saw progress with his team’s 6-9 season.
“I felt the guys overall had a nice season,” said Cowitch. “We easily could have flipped that record to 9-6. The guys worked hard all season to improve their scores.”
Bret Cohan and Jack Lloyd competed in the EPC Championships and the DXI qualifier. Both players’ seasons and careers ended in the qualifier.
The Zephyrs will return Logan Shean, Nate Miley, Owen Miley, Derrick James, and Zach Kresge next season.
