Two Hornets compete in D-11 singles tournament

Two Emmaus players competed in last week’s District 11 singles tennis championships.

The Hornets’ Gabby Tranguch took on the No. 4 seed, Vasoula Skarlis of Stroudsburg in the first round. In the only one of eight first-round matches that went three sets, the Hornet junior lost 6-0, 3-6, 6-2.

Emmaus senior Sophia Kaufman had an even tougher draw at districts, having to face the No. 2 seed Elizabeth Trott of Pocono Mountain East in the first round and falling 6-1, 6-3.

Parkland’s Lexie Warsing repeated as District 11 Class 3A champ with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Trojan teammate Sadie Pollard in the finals. Warsing won all four of her district matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Emmaus has six players back on the court this week in the District 11 doubles tournament.

Tranguch and Kaufman will play together and are seeded sixth in the event, which began Tuesday and concludes with semifinals and finals Thursday at Lehigh University. The Hornets’ Brooke DiGiacomo and Nat Hillegass are also entered in the doubles tournament as the sixth seed, while teammates Fiona Harvey and Zoe Santana are unseeded for the event.
