Tigers win four straight matches

After a three-game skid, the Northwestern girls volleyball team has won four straight matches as the Tigers head into the regular season finale against Pen Argyl.

In that four-game span they lost just three sets.

The biggest win came against Notre Dame of Green Pond when Northwestern won 3-2. The Lady Tigers swept the two regular season meetings with the Crusaders with the earlier win being in straight sets.

Daisy Stringer and Leah Nagle led the way with 16 and 11 kills, respectively. Lacy Clymer and Lexi George each had three serving aces with Clymer posting a 100 percent serving percentage on 24 saves for Northwestern. George also had 34 digs and Anna Eberling put up five solo blocks on the way to the win.

After winning the first set 25-17, Northwestern took Notre Dame to the brink before falling 26-24 in set number two and then lost the third set 25-22.

While Notre Dame looked to defend their home court, Northwestern was not giving into anything. The Lady Tigers fired back in the fourth set for a 25-23 win and then took set number five 15-10 to get their first win on Notre Dame’s court.

In wins over Jim Thorpe and Lehighton, Nagle continued to put up big numbers with a total of 27 kills, 27 digs, and a 94 percent (16-for-17) serving percentage in the two matches. Stringer had 21 kills, sophomore Kayla Schaffer contributed 56 assists, and George had 47 digs in the wins. Senior Danielle Riggan went 13-for-13 in serves to help beat the Olympians and Indians.

The Lady Tigers downed the Olympians in straight sets 25-13, 25-20, and 25-15. Against Lehighton, the Indians came out strong and took the first set 27-25, which sent a wake-up call to Northwestern as it stormed back for 25-13 and 25-12 wins in the next two sets before putting away the final set 25-23.

Schaffer was 15-for-15 in serves against the Indians and picked up 35 of her 56 assists in that win.

The Tigers will finish their regular season Friday against Pen Argyl.

Northwestern (13-2 Colonial, 13-6 overall) has locked up the number two seed in the Colonial League playoffs and that potentially sets up a rematch with Notre Dame of Green Pond (11-4, 11-6) in the semifinals of the league playoffs. Notre Dame plays Saucon Valley (10-5, 10-6) in the season finale and if the Panthers were to defeat Notre Dame, then Saucon Valley would move into the third seed and face Northwestern. That leaves top seed Southern Lehigh (15-0, 15-0) to face whichever team loses that final match.

The semifinals will be held at Catasauqua High School on Tuesday, and the finals will be back there Thursday at 6 p.m.
