Tiger soccer teams end regular season with wins

Heading into the 2025 postseason, the Northwestern boys soccer team (13-0-0 Colonial, 18-1-0 overall) has just one more loss than last year’s unbeaten state champion team did when it finished its regular season.

After wrapping up its Colonial League schedule last week, Northwestern took on Kutztown in a nonleague game to finish the regular season. Kutztown (14-3-1) came in looking to hand the Tigers a season-finale defeat, but instead the Cougars were the ones leaving with another loss on their record as Northwestern won 3-2.

Kutztown found out what a lot of other teams have discovered this season ‑ it’s not easy to slay the three-headed monster that is Cole Mertz, Logan Mesics and Caelen Stangil.

Each of the team’s top scorers got a goal and Mertz added an assist in the win for Northwestern Lehigh. Goalie Dean Carl, who took up the role of starting goalie this season and ran with it, picked up his 17th win of the season.

The Northwestern offense put up 121 goals this season while the defense allowed just 20 goals on the year. Mesics (41 goals), Mertz (35), and Stangil (29) led the team in goals on the season and also made up the top three assist leaders. Mesics led with 27 assists, followed by Mertz (24), and Stangil (23).

The season was good enough to place Northwestern at the top of the Colonial League tournament seedings as they defend their league championship from last season. Next week starts the district tournament where the Tigers are also the defending champions.

The Northwestern girls recently capped an unbeaten season.

Goalie Olivia Reinhart and the Lady Tiger defense allowed just 12 goals all season in 2025, including all of the team’s league, district and state playoff games.

The 2025 version of the defending state champions allowed just five goals this season with leagues, districts and states yet to come.

The team ended the regular season undefeated with a 46-game winning streak intact, giving it the state record for the longest winning streak in girls soccer. The regular season ended with an 11-1 win over Pen Argyl.

Northwestern (14-0-0 Colonial, 18-0-0 overall) is the top seed going into the Colonial League tournament as it looks to defend its league title this week, its district title starting next week, and its state championship beginning later in the month.
