Pollard, Lee win D-11 doubles title
One week after competing against one another in the semifinals of the District 11 singles tournament, Parkland’s Sadie Pollard and Sonia Lee were back on the court, but competing on the same side of this net this time as a doubles team.
The Parkland duo was the top seed for last week’s district doubles tournament and the pair won four straight matches at the event to earn this year’s gold medal.
“Sadie and Sonia have supported and challenged each other all season,” said Parkland head coach Candace Young. “Last week they faced off against each other in the singles tournament and this week they came full-circle as partners to claim the doubles title.
“This is an amazing moment for them and it shows the incredible success of their teamwork and friendship.”
Lee, a sophomore and district singles bronze medalist, and Pollard, a freshman who was district singles runner up, beat their first three opponents at district doubles in straight sets.
In the finals against the No. 2 seeded team of Lydia Moyer and Sophia GiGiacinto of Nazareth, Pollard and Lee battled to come back from a first-set loss to win the title 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.
The Trojans are the top seed for this week’s District 11 team tournament.
