PHS wins fifth straight D-11 crown

With three of the best singles players in the Lehigh Valley and a line up of doubles teams that battle for every point, the Parkland girls tennis team was nearly unstoppable this season.

The Trojans beat every team in the East Penn Conference and swept the postseason events.

Last week they capped their dominant season in the Lehigh Valley when they held off Emmaus for the District 11 team title, 3-1 on Thursday, Oct. 16 at Lehigh University.

“This season has been magical,” said first-year Trojan head coach Candace Young. “It’s literally been the perfect season. I think someone has to pinch me. They all make me look good. Their work ethic, their rapport as teammates. It’s not just the on-court stuff but it’s also the off-court stuff.”

Parkland was the top seed for districts and opened the tournament last week with a 5-0 win over. Lexie Warsing, Sadie Pollard and Sonia Lee won singles matches. Kiana Miles and Yihan Li won the No. 1 doubles match. Kate Gilchrist and Hannah Schmoyer won the second doubles match in the shutout win.

The Trojans beat Liberty 3-2 in the second round to advance to the final against Emmaus, which Parkland had beaten 5-2 in a regular season match on Sept. 22.

The Trojans swept the singles matches against the Hornets to clinch last week’s championship.

Lee’s point turned out to be the match-clinching point for the second straight year after the sophomore was part of a doubles team that won the clinching match during her freshman season.

“I started calling her our closer because she was on the deciding court in doubles last year,” said Young. “It’s an inspiration to me as a tennis player to see how she has become so strong mentally and just staying focused on one ball at a time.”

Warsing, a two-time district singles champ, has been the team’s leader this season.

“Lexie has played a huge role for us,” said Young. “Some teams might have a champion. Other teams might have a leader. But she is both. That sets the tone for everyone else on the team.

“She takes the pressure off the other players knowing she’s such a solid and dominant player that we can count on her every time.”

For Warsing, who is headed to Elon University to continue her education and tennis career, leading a young team was enjoyable for her final season of high school tennis.

“We’ve been working really hard,” she said. “We had a lot of seniors [graduate from last year’s team]. I’m really content with how we did this season.”

Gilchrist is the other senior in Parkland’s starting line up this season. Along with Warsing she is a four-year member of the varsity team and has earned a team district gold medal all four season as Parkland extended its district title streak to five straight and six of the last seven.

“I love this team so much,” said Gilchrist. “We’ve worked so hard.”

The Trojans will send entries to every level of the state tournament.

Warsing will return to the singles championships for her second consecutive season. Pollard and Lee will compete in the PIAA doubles tournament. And the team has a match this week in the state team championship, where it has lost in the first round each of the past four seasons.

But this year’s team is going to battle for every point in that tournament like it has all season long.

“I think we have a fighting chance this year,” said Gilchrist.
