PHS reaches EPC boys soccer semi

The Parkland and Emmaus High School boys soccer teams were the class of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference heading into the regular season finale last week, with both teams sporting undefeated records.

The Trojans remained the lone unbeaten as they scored a late goal to down the Hornets 1-0 last Wednesday.

Parkland finished the season 17-0-1 overall and 17-0 in the EPC, while Emmaus dropped to 14-1-3 and 13-1-3.

It was a set piece that proved vital for the Trojans as on their first corner kick of the game, senior Anthony Bautista met junior Alex Hurwitz’s out swinging corner kick with his head and guided it into the net during the second half for the game’s lone goal. Andrew Staples finished with four saves in net for the win.

Parkland was victorious over Central Catholic, 4-0, in the EPC quarterfinal round Tuesday. There were four different goal scorers, including Bautista, Ryan Bender, Tal Pollard and Hurwitz. Bender, Hurwitz and Lincoln Fritz. The Trojans outshot the Vikings 12-3 and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. Staples finished with three saves.

The Trojans will now take on the number four seed, Freedom, in the semifinal round Thursday with a chance at winning their first conference title since 2022. The winner will play either second-seeded Emmaus or third-seeded Northampton in the championship game on Saturday afternoon.
