PHS girls volleyball falls in league semifinal
The Parkland High School girls volleyball team had a 12-match win streak in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference matches going into its regular season finale last week, but lost the streak as the Trojans fell to rival Emmaus in five sets.
Scores of the match were 18-25, 25-18, 24-26, 25-11,15-12.
The Trojans had previously defeated the Green Hornets in five sets last month, but lost the rematch. Parkland ended the season 14-4 overall and 13-3 in the conference, while Emmaus was 15-3 and 14-2.
Kasia Burda led the attack with 14 kills. Chloe Coonradt paced the defensive effort with 36 digs and Gabby Nissen added 12 digs. Alex Serina contributed 20 assists and Gabby Brader recorded 14 assists.
Parkland earned the four seed in the EPC Tournament and squared off with the fifth seed, Central Catholic, for the third time this season, in the quarterfinal round this past Saturday afternoon at Parkland. The Trojans responded from the season finale and took down the Vikettes in straight sets by scores of 25-19, 25-23, 25-17.
Burda finished with 10 kills and four blocks. MJ Bhanji tallied six kills and a team-high five blocks. Both Nissen and Riley Schilling ended with six kills. Coonradt contributed 17 digs. Serina dished out 30 assists.
The Trojans went up against the top seed, Bethlehem Catholic in the semifinal round Tuesday at Northampton High School. The Golden Hawks swept the eighth seed, Pocono Mountain East, in the quarterfinal. Parkland was downed in four sets by scores of 20-25, 25-14, 16-25, 13-25, and the Golden Hawks advanced to take on Emmaus in the final Thursday night.
Burda finished with a team-best 12 kills and six blocks. Sami Walls recorded eight kills, six digs and two blocks. Both Schilling and Nissen tallied five kills. Coonradt contributed a team-high 19 digs and Serina added 31 assists.
The Trojans will now look forward to the District 11 tournament next week.
