PHS girls soccer aims to start new golden streak

Last season, a streak of four consecutive District 11 titles ended when the Parkland High School girls soccer team fell short in the district playoffs.

This season, the Trojans are looking to get back to the top of the district after winning their first two games in the tournament.

Top-seeded Parkland entered districts after winning three straight games in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference playoffs to win the conference title.

After earning the number one overall seed in districts, the Trojans opened with a 4-0 victory over the eighth seed, East Stroudsburg South, last Wednesday evening at Parkland High School in the quarterfinal round.

Isabella Hallal was the leading scorer with three of the four goals. Avery Maier tallied the other goal and also added an assist, along with Jummai Umaru. Both Hanna Hertzog and Keira Shearer split time in net and finished with one save each.

In the semifinal round this past Tuesday night at Emmaus High School, Parkland downed the fourth seed Easton, 5-1. Hallal led the offense with two goals and each of Mackenzie McNeely, Maia Rojas-Ondra and Delilah Zaiter found the back of the net once. Hallal recorded an assist. Hertzog ended the night with four saves in goal for the victory.

Parkland, which improved to 19-3-1 overall, will take on the second seed, Nazareth, in the championship game Thursday night at Northampton High School. It’s a rematch of the EPC title game, which the Trojans won 3-0 for the gold medal. During the regular season, the two teams met once and the game resulted in a 2-2 tie.
