PHS football team holds off Mounties
The Parkland High School football team got out to a sizable lead early, watched as the advantage was cut in half and then tacked on more later to win its District 11 6A quarterfinal round matchup against Stroudsburg 49-14 last Friday night at Parkland Area School District Stadium.
The Trojans, who improved to 11-0 overall, scored the game’s first 28 points in the first half before the Mounties (5-6) answered with 14 straight points before halftime.
Parkland bounced back after intermission and recorded a 21-0 third quarter to take back control and see out the win at home.
“It was certainly a good test,” said PHS assistant head coach Mike Facchiano. “The intensity that Stroudsburg played with coupled with an impressive passing game was what you would expect from a team and coaching staff like that. The answer was to maintain our composure, make appropriate adjustments, and continue to fight for the full game.”
The Trojans offense had a strong outing, led by quarterback Finn Coen, who threw for 201 yards and three touchdowns, including one each to TJ Lawrence, Nassim Adams and Blake Nassry.
“Finn has continued to develop as a leader and quarterback for us all year,” Facchiano said. “You can tell how far he has come with his composure since Week 1 and he is able to ride the highs and lows of the position.”
Lawrence finished with 68 yards on the ground and 80 yards receiving with three total touchdowns, two rushing and one through the air. Adams had 61 yards receiving and Nassry caught four passes for 56 yards. Naquan Thomason rushed five times for 50 yards and a score.
Defensively, Lawrence and Liam Spang led the way with seven tackles each, with Spang adding an interception. Cooper Bauer recorded six tackles and both Henry Weikel and Dominic Martrich added five tackles.
Michael Car had two tackles and an interception and Logan Christman tallied one tackle and one sack.
Second-seeded Parkland will now host third-seeded Nazareth Friday night in the semifinals. Easton (11-0) faces Liberty in the other semifinal this weekend.
