Falcons get back to D-11 final
Fans of The Rocky Horror Picture Show are familiar with the song “Let’s Do The Time Warp Again.”
Looking at this year’s District 11 Class 2A field hockey playoff brackets brings that little ditty to mind since the brackets are exactly the same as they were a year ago.
The semifinals had Bangor and Southern Lehigh in one game and Pocono Mountain East and Salisbury in the other. The finals matched Southern Lehigh and Salisbury just like they do in the 2025 version of the tournament. For Salisbury fans, the hope is that is where things go off script and that Salisbury will be the district champion, not Southern Lehigh.
There was a difference in the score between PM East and Salisbury in this year’s meeting.
The Falcons didn’t take just a 4-0 win over the Cardinals, they took a 10-0 win this season behind four goals from Kendra Morgan, three from Gwyn DeFazio, two from Ellie Schneider, and another by Sarah Beckage.
The game also featured another milestone for DeFazio in her senior season when she scored her second goal of the game to reach the 200-point plateau, increasing her school record.
“I have to give all of the credit to my coaches and my teammates,” said DeFazio, the Kutztown University recruit. “I get goals from other people’s assists and I get assists from other people’s goals. It’s all a team effort and I’m happy when I can get the goals and when my teammates get them.
“When you’re in the circle, it’s easy to be selfish sometimes, but I try to find the player with the best shot and sometimes that’s not me. It helps when you have good players around you to get the ball to and take passes from.”
The game was tightly contested in the first half with Morgan and Schneider each getting a first quarter goal and Gwyn DeFazio picking up her first of the game in the second for a 3-0 Salisbury lead at halftime.
The Falcons were able to run down a much less experienced team in the second half to erupt for seven goals.
Pocono Mountain East’s roster has just one senior, but the talented group of young players still put together a strong season and were able to reach districts.
Morgan erupted in the second half and scored three goals for the Falcons. The first goal came off a corner play and was assisted by DeFazio. Five minutes later, Morgan struck again, and five minutes after that it was the senior picking up her fourth goal of the game to make it 6-0.
“We really went back to our old ways tonight,” said Morgan. “We got hyped and did our team rituals and just felt strong coming in. I think the underdog feeling really is coming out in us and we are really excited for finals.”
With just :20 left in the third quarter, Schneider added her second goal to put PM East down 7-0.
DeFazio scored twice in the final quarter with the first one putting her over the 200-point mark and the second just continuing her lead on the all-time list at Salisbury.
The Falcons again used a penalty corner to get one last goal when Beckage made it an even 10 goals for Salisbury, which scored 10 goals in a game three times during the regular season.
The Salisbury defense limited the Cardinals opportunities to even enter the attack zone and goalie Caroline Gedney was called on to make just two saves in the game.
“They have been putting the work in and I think that they are going into the finals really ready to take the gold this year,” said Salisbury head coach Jane Brennan. “That’s everything they have been working towards. They also have a strong sense of community and rely on each other and they’re friends on and off the field; they really want to win this.”
The building rivalry with Southern Lehigh continues in the District 11 finals where the Spartans downed Salisbury 2-0 last season.
During the regular season, the teams split their two games with each team winning at home. They did not meet in this year’s Colonial League tournament, but the Falcons downed the Spartans in the 2024 league semifinals.
