Falcon field hockey needs four wins to go unbeaten

Somewhere between the hot days of August and now the field hockey season has nearly come and gone.

The Falcons have just four regular season games remaining on their schedule before going into the Colonial League and District 11 playoffs. With wins over their big three opponents – Southern Lehigh, Northwestern Lehigh, and now Bangor – Salisbury has cemented their position among the top teams.

The latest test came against Bangor with Salisbury grabbing a 4-0 win over the Slaters (8-3 Colonial, 10-3 overall). At the time the two teams met, Bangor had lost just one game and that was to Southern Lehigh. Southern Lehigh was the second loss and Wilson (8-4-1, 9-4-1) then beat them as the Warriors look to move into the upper tier of teams in the league.

Salisbury (12-0, 13-0) got a pair of goals from senior Gwyn DeFazio and single goals from senior classmates Kendra Morgan and Sarah Beckage to wrap up the win.

DeFazio had another big week as she put two more goals onto her resume when Salisbury beat Lehighton 6-0. Morgan added another goal in the victory over the Indians as well with junior Ellie Schneider and sophomores Ella Morgans and Ryley Shoemaker adding their names to the list of goal scorers. DeFazio had two assists in the game with Schneider and Shoemaker picking up assists.

Not only did the Falcons shut Lehighton (0-10-1, 2-10-1) down from getting any goals, they also did not even allow a shot on goal or a corner. Then there’s Salisbury who fired 31 shots on goal and had 12 corners in the game.

The shutout was the fifth straight with Salisbury outscoring their opponents 32-0 during that span of games. Salisbury and Emmaus in 3A are the only remaining undefeated teams in District 11.

The four remaining games between the Falcons and an undefeated season are against division rivals Saucon Valley, Palisades, Catasauqua, and Southern Lehigh. Salisbury has beaten each of the teams once this season by outscoring them 30-0 in the first meeting.
