Emmaus goes unbeaten in EPC
The Emmaus field hockey team finished unbeaten in East Penn Conference play with a win over Parkland last week.
The Hornets earned the top seed for the league playoffs and opened postseason play with a 5-0 win over No. 8 Stroudsburg last week.
Emmaus took a 2-0 first-half lead in the playoff game when Addison Povilaitis scored in the first quarter on an assist from Madi Lenig.
Gracie Huffer’s goal in the second quarter, assisted by Povilaitis, made it 2-0 at halftime.
Avery Burnett scored with an assist from Huffer in the third quarter.
Marissa Gigliotti and Ella Horner added fourth quarter goals, assisted by Lenig and Povilaitis.
Emmaus took 40 shots and allowed the Mountaineers just three. The Hornets also held a 15-2 edge in penalty corners in the game.
Goal keeper Emily Romano made three saves against Stroudsburg.
Emmaus won a nonleague game over Phillipsburg, 4-0 last Thursday.
Morgann Orobono, Huffer, Horner and Povilaitis scored goals against the Stateliners, while Lenig assisted on two goals and Huffer assisted on one score.
The Hornets outshot Phillipsburg 25-1 and had an 8-0 advantage in penalty corners.
Emmaus beat Parkland 2-1 in both teams’ final regular season league game last Tuesday, Oct. 7.
Parkland’s Olivia Esteban put her team in front with a goal in the first quarter. Horner tied the game on a penalty stroke in the second quarter.
After a scoreless third quarter, Lenig scored the game-winner in the fourth on an assist from Orobono.
Emmaus outshot Parkland 21-1 and had 15 corners while the Trojans had none.
The Hornets went 13-0 in league play and improved to 18-1 overall with Saturday’s win.
Emmaus moved on to Tuesday’s EPC semifinals to face No. 5 seed Nazareth. The Blue Eagles (13-5 overall; 9-4 EPC) beat No. 4 Northampton 3-2 in overtime to advance to the semifinals.
The other semifinal had No. 3 Parkland facing No. 2 Easton. The Trojans beat Liberty 5-0 in the first round. The Red Rovers advanced with a 6-0 win over Freedom.
The league title game is set for Thursday at 7 p.m. at Liberty.
