EHS takes first loss of season

The Emmaus High School boys soccer team had remained unbeaten heading into last week’s regular season finale against Parkland.

Both teams had ties on their record as the Hornets entered the match 14-0-3 while the defending state runners-up were 16-0-1 with only Emmaus left on the schedule.

Just one goal separated the two teams last Wednesday at Memorial Field as Parkland scored the game’s only goal to escape with a 1-0 win.

The Trojans scored off a corner kick by Anthony Bautista and assist by Alex Hurwitz midway through the second half to remain unbeaten.

Emmaus was outshot 6-5 overall and the teams were tied 4-4 in shots on goal. The Hornets had three corner kicks compared to Parkland’s four. Gavin Yartymyk finished with three saves in net.

Emmaus earned the two seed in this week’s EPC playoffs. It hosted the seventh seed, Nazareth, in the quarterfinal round Tuesday.

The two teams met just once this season, a 2-0 victory for the Hornets back on Oct. 2. The winner will take on either No. 3 seed Northampton or sixth seed Pleasant Valley in the semifinal round on Thursday.

The other quarterfinal round matchups include top seed Parkland against the eighth seed, Central Catholic, and fourth-seeded Freedom against fifth-seeded Liberty.
