EHS hangs on to beat Bears

The Emmaus High School boys soccer team has had a strong regular season so far, especially in Eastern Pennsylvania Conference play as it is unbeaten through 14 games. The Hornets were victorious on three more games last week, two at home and one on the road.

Emmaus started the week with a 7-1 victory over East Stroudsburg South last Monday night at Memorial Field. On Wednesday night, the Green Hornets took down Stroudsburg on the road 5-0. The next day, Emmaus held on to defeat Pleasant Valley at home 2-1.

“We have had some great training this season,” said head coach John Cari on the fast start to the season. “The kids come with a great attitude, work hard and want to get better. We only take things one game at a time.”

In the win over the Cavaliers, Emmaus jumped ahead early, scoring six goals in the first half and adding a seventh in the second half.

ESS scored its goal in the opening half.

Andy Manz led the way for the EHS offense with two goals, and Austen Breisch, Aleksander Przybylski, Conner Powell, Maseyn Muthard and Anthony Suida all found the back of the net once. Robbie Tumblin, Suida, Powell and Przybylski each contributed an assist.

Emmaus outshot South 31-8 and 21-5 on goal. Will Peck finished with four saves in net.

In the victory against the Mounties, the Hornets netted three goals in the first half and two more in the second half. Suida, Przybylski, Jeremy Sharpless, Rio Johnson and Gabe Reyes all tallied a goal. Tumblin contributed two assists and both Powell and Muthard added one.

Emmaus finished with 23 shots and did not allow one.

In the match with the Bears, the Hornets had to hold on late to walk off winners as they netted both their goals in the opening half and Pleasant Valley cut its deficit with a goal in the second half.

Powell and Brennan Stack had the goals for the Hornets with Muthard and Johnson contributing an assist each. Emmaus outshot PV 6-2. Gavin Yartymyk finished with one save.

Emmaus is now 12-0-2 overall and 11-0-2 in the conference with four left in the regular season.

The Hornets are second in the District 11 rankings and in second place in the EPC behind Parkland. The Hornets and Trojans meet Oct. 8 at Emmaus.
