Doubles teams compete in D-11 tourney

Three Emmaus pairings competed in last week’s District 11 doubles championships. All three teams won one match at the event before falling to higher-seeded duos.

Sofia Kaufman and Gabby Tranguch earned the sixth seed for districts and won their opening match 6-1, 6-1 over a team from Nazareth. Kaufman and Tranguch dropped their second match to the tournament’s third seed, 6-4, 6-1.

The Hornets’ Natalie Hillegas and Brooke DiGiacomo were seeded eighth at the tournament and survive a long first-round battle against the No. 9 seed from Freedom.

The Hornet pair won the match 6-2, 5-7, 6-3 before falling to the tops seed and eventual champs Sonia Lee and Sadie Pollard (Parkland), 6-1, 6-1.

Zoe Santana and Fiona Harvey represented Emmaus as an unseeded team at districts.

They knocked off seventh seeded Kiana Miles and Yihan Li (Parkland) 6-4, 6-1 in the first round before falling to the second seed and eventual runners-up Lydia Moyer and Sophia GiGiacinto of Nazareth by way of injury default.

Emmaus (16-2) enters this week District 11 team tournament as the No. 2 seed behind unbeaten Parkland. The Hornets’ match against No. 2 Freedom was rained out Monday and rescheduled for Tuesday.

Team tournament finals are scheduled for Thursday at 2 p.m. at Lehigh University.
