Double-OT goal beats Trojans
The Emmaus High School girls soccer team won both of its games to finish off the regular season portion of its schedule last week and is taking some positive momentum into the postseason.
In Eastern Pennsylvania Conference games last week, the Hornets defeated Liberty 6-0 last Monday night, Oct. 6, and then took down rival Parkland 2-1 in double overtime on Wednesday.
In the win against the Hurricanes, Emmaus scored four goals in the first half and then two more in the second half.
Five different players accounted for the six goals as Ella Scharper scored twice and Hannah Berk, Sofia Isaksson, Brynn Campbell and Amelia Lower found the back of net once each. Lizzy Bender contributed two assists and Berk, Giuliana Meyer and Celeste Peralta all added one assist. Sadie Wallace and Zoe Reppert both split time in net and Wallace finished with one save on one shot faced.
In the victory over the Trojans, the Hornets got on the scoreboard first thanks to a first half goal from Bender and an assist by Meyer.
Parkland evened the score with a goal in the second half from Kennedy Perkins and on an assist by Meghan Tarantino.
The score remained the same through the end of regulation and through the first overtime period until Sophia Shutkufski tallied the golden goal in the second overtime period off an assist by Bender.
Wallace came up big in net for her team, finishing with 11 saves on 12 Parkland shots.
Emmaus, which improved to 16-2 overall and 15-1 in the conference, earned the two seed in the EPC playoffs. It hosted the seventh seed, Freedom, this past Tuesday evening in the quarterfinal round. The winner takes on either third-seeded Parkland or sixth seed Whitehall in the semifinal round Thursday.
