With the postseason beginning this weekend, the Northwestern field hockey team has qualified for both the Colonial League and District 11 playoffs.
The only blemish for Northwestern over the past week was in a nonleague game against a strong and talented Crestwood team. The Comets are 7-0 in the Wyoming Valley Conference and 12-0-2 overall. The Tigers were shutout 4-0 in that game but bookended the loss with a pair of 5-0 wins over Northern Lehigh and Palmerton.
In their penultimate game of the regular season, Northwestern blanked Catasauqua 9-0 Tuesday night and it play at Lehighton in the season finale.
Against the Rough Riders six different Northwestern players scored at least one goal in the game. Hannah Gober, Faith Slifer, and McKensey Miller each scored twice, and Taylor Langley, Ella Bressi, and Evelyn Alboucq all contributed with a goal as well. Goalie Ryan Smolinsky was called upon to make just two saves.
The Lady Tigers will be either the three or four seed for the league playoffs. To move into the third seed, Northwestern has to beat Lehighton and hope for a Pen Argyl (8-6) win over Bangor (11-3), which holds the tiebreaker over Northwestern by virtue of a Slaters 1-0 win in their only regular season meeting. The Slaters beat Pen Argyl earlier in the season by a 4-1 score. A Northwestern loss or a Bangor win puts Northwestern into the four seed for the Colonial League tournament.
Northwestern holds the top seed in the District 11 1A classification, but league tournaments can affect who holds that top spot. A league championship would secure that spot for Northwestern.
