Blue Eagles will come to Orefield for football semi
In a District 11 Class 6A semifinal game this Friday night at Parkland School District Stadium, it will be a matchup between two teams that have accounted for the last three district titles and five of the last six.
Second-seeded Parkland welcomes third-seeded Nazareth with a shot at another district championship next week.
The Trojans (11-0 overall) enter the game after a 49-14 victory over the seventh seed, Stroudsburg, in the quarterfinal round last Friday night. The Blue Eagles (8-3) are coming in on the heels of a 37-36 win over the sixth seed, Northampton.
Nazareth has won three district golds within the last six seasons, and was the favorite again this year before starting quarterback and University of Auburn commit Peyton Falzone was lost for the year due to injury.
Still, the Eagles put up 37 points last week against a good Northampton team and Parkland will still be alert to the athletes on their roster.
“They have been faced with adversity all year through various injuries to key players and they continue to perform at high levels,” said PHS assistant head coach Mike Facchiano. “Quarterback Cooper Madson certainly has been developing and maturing throughout the year, which is a credit to Cooper, the coaching staff and Peyton Falzone. On defense, they will challenge teams for a full 48 minutes.”
Madson threw for 125 yards and a TD last Friday. The big plays came from running back Marquez Wimberly, who rushed 25 times for 253 yards and three scores.
In the win over the Mounties last weekend, the Trojans offense had a strong outing, led by quarterback Finn Coen, who threw for 201 yards and three touchdowns, including one each to TJ Lawrence, Nassim Adams and Blake Nassry. Lawrence finished with 68 yards on the ground and 80 yards receiving with three total touchdowns, two rushing and one through the air. Adams had 61 yards receiving and Nassry caught four passes for 56 yards. Naquan Thomason rushed five times for 50 yards and a score.
The defensive unit also continued to be strong as it has all season, allowing 14 points or less for all but one game.
“On offense, we need to maintain a balance of run/pass on all downs,” Facchiano said. “That comes from the offensive line’s ability to do their job and our skills guys keeping us on schedule. On defense, we absolutely must prevent big home runs that you can expect at any time, especially from the skills group of Wimberly, Depietro, Zelachowski and Leluga to name a few.”
The other semifinal features top seed Easton hosting fourth seed Liberty.
