Adali goal carries PHS to title

Parkland and Emmaus are well known to each other, and the boys soccer teams have had some true rumbles.

The games are usually close, and the two teams didn’t disappoint this season.

When they met in the regular season the result was a 1-0 Parkland win.

The two rivals didn’t meet in the East Penn Conference playoffs, but they followed their usual collision courses in districts and came up against each other in the District 11 final Saturday at Salisbury High School.

Parkland made a lone goal stand up for a 1-0 win, its second straight district gold and third in four years.

Both teams have had some offensive struggles of late, but the Trojans had straightened theirs out with a four-goal win over Nazareth in the quarterfinals and then a 2-1 semifinal win over Freedom, which had shut out the Trojans in the EPC playoffs.

For Emmaus, its offensive skid had continued into districts. After scoring just three goals in three league tournament games, but still being crowned EPC champions, the Hornets had a bye into the district semifinals and had to go to penalty kicks to win that game over Easton. The key to both teams continuing to advance was their defenses.

In Saturday’s finals, Parkland found an early goal when a pair of seniors came together for what would be the game’s only score.

Anthony Bautista played a ball over to Kerem Adali, who unleashed a line drive that bounced past Emmaus goalie Gavin Yartymyk for the 1-0 lead.

“It was awesome, really good feeling,” said Adali, whose winning goal was just his third of the season. “I work hard at practice. I had a feeling today I was going to score and my friends were also telling me I was going to score, and it just happened.

“I saw Anthony. He made a nice pass. It was on the floor, and I just knew I had to shoot that. I shot it and it went in. I think we played really good today. There was a lot of back-and-forth, but we were the better team. We work hard at practice. We work hard in games. It just shows it.”

One reason why Emmaus was unable to score in the game was because of the show that backup goalie Matt Feiller was putting on in front of the net.

Feiller, who had come on in relief of Andrew Staples when he was injured in the district quarterfinals, went on to allow just one goal to Freedom in the semis.

Against Emmaus, Feiller jumped, dove and slid to make stops. Feiller finished with eight saves in the game with Yartymyk recording five saves.

“Staples over there, he’s the starter,” Feiller said. “Started our season and we were 17-0 with him. Gets injured, backup has to step up.

“I made saves. I was hyped last game with Freedom when we won that. That was an amazing comeback there. A lot more action in this game, it was great.”

The biggest play by Feiller came with just :10 left in regulation. Emmaus had a long pass down field to senior Austen Breisch who was in position to make a play, but Feiller came out to make a leaping grab and took the opportunity away from Breisch.

Staples is expected to return for the state playoffs.

Both teams had already locked up spots in the PIAA tournament that begins this week.

With the win, Parkland (21-1-1) hosted Springfield Township (16-6-0), the number four team from District 1, in the first round of the state playoffs Tuesday.
