Becahi set for next Holy War
It wasn’t pretty, but nobody cares about style points this part of the football season.
Bethlehem Catholic (7-4) struggled to put a pesky Pottsville team away last week, but eventually imposed their will in the fourth quarter, scoring two touchdowns to break a 14-14 score heading into the final frame to come away with a 28-14 victory in the District 11 4A quarterfinals.
It now sets up a Holy War rematch Thursday night at BASD Stadium with Central Catholic (6-5) coming to town for a 6:35 p.m. kickoff.
Central was much crisper in their quarterfinal matchup, running away from Jim Thorpe 52-21 last week.
With Pottsville coming into last week with just three wins on the season and being undersized all over the field, Hawks’ head coach Joe Bernard hopes it was a lesson his group can take with them moving forward in the postseason.
“I give Pottsville a lot of credit because they came out and played inspired and we just didn’t play well in the first half,” said Bernard. “They got after us up front in the first half and at halftime we had a chat with the guys and I thought we played much more like Beca football.”
Cayden Vassa returned from injury for the Hawks and picked up where he left off, rushing for 162 yards and three scores on the night to go along with 124 yards passing and a score.
Vassa hit Armando Thom for the eventual game-winning throw on a 78-yard score in the fourth quarter to put Beca ahead.
The Hawks beat Central 28-24 back in week five, but this one should be even tighter.
“I don’t think I have to get their attention this week,” said Bernard. “We’re both good football teams and our schedule gets us ready to play these type of games. Both teams will be ready to go.”
