Classical View: Concerts that care at Northampton Area Community College, Lafayette College

“I believe the collective experience of a live music performance can be truly profound for audience and performers alike,” says Julia Erin Urich, actor, singer and Emmy Award-winning producer and director.

“Walk On: An Evening of Songs & Stories” is at 7 p.m. Nov. 8, Lipkin Theatre, Northampton Community College, Bethlehem Township.

The concert, billed as an evening of hope, joy, love and resilience, is a collage of music by composers, including Andrew Lloyd Webber, Harold Arlen, Howard Ashman, Alan Menken and Steven Schwartz.

Accompanying Urich are vocalists Jarrod Yuskauskas, tenor; Ed Bara, bass-baritone, pianist; Tony Sandor, saxophone; Tynan Hooker-Haring, bass, and Bob Stevens, percussion.

Says Urich, “I think art, especially live, shared, experiential art, is one of the most important forms of expression.

“I find myself in this disconnected digital world craving the experience as an audience member as well as a musician and I hope the music and little stories I share move someone in some way.”

Mezzo-soprano Urich has performed in high school musicals, with area orchestras and in productions at Muhlenberg College Summer Theatre, MunOpCo Music Theatre and Civic Theatre of Allentown. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Theater from Muhlenberg College. She is the recipient of nine Emmy Awards.

“The Isidore String Quartet embodies everything I look for when programming the Performance Series: artistry, curiosity and a deep connection to both tradition and the present moment,” says Ty Furman, Director, Performance Series, Williams Center for the Arts, Lafayette College.

“Their program bridges centuries of music with a sense of discovery that feels completely alive and we’re thrilled to share that energy with the Lehigh Valley audience.”

“Isidore String Quartet in Concert,” 8 p.m. Nov. 1, Williams Center for the Arts, Lafayette College, Easton.

Formed at the Juilliard School in 2019 and inspired by the renowned Juilliard Quartet, the musicians of the Isidore String Quartet seek to invigorate chamber music through a fresh and dynamic approach.

The concert opened with the “String Quartet in B-flat major, Op. 76, No. 4 “Sunrise” by Franz Josef Haydn (1731-1809). Composed in 1797 and comprising four movements, the work gets its “Sunrise” nickname from the spirited violin passages of the opening movement, “Allegro con spirito.”

Next was a contemporary work by composer Gabriella Smith (born 1991). The inspiration for her “Carrot Revolution for String Quartet” (2015) was a quote by French artist Paul Cézanne (1839-1906): “The day will come when a single, freshly observed carrot will start a revolution.” The piece combines music genres, from Gregorian chant, folk music, bluegrass to jazz.

After intermission, the quartet performed Antonin Dvorak’s (1841-1904) four-movement “String Quartet in G major, Op. 106” (1895), classical in style with a blend of traditional Czech folk elements.

Members of the Isidore String Quartet are violinists Adrian Steele and Phoenix Avalon, violist Devin Moore and cellist Joshua McClendon.

“We’re so excited to welcome the Isidore String Quartet to Lafayette College,” says Marta Kepka, Lafayette College Director of Arts Marketing.

“Their fearless mix of classical mastery and contemporary edge reflects the vibrancy of the arts in our region. It’s the kind of performance that reminds audiences why live music still matters: intimate, bold and full of possibility.”
