Third-grade students visit borough hall

Sheckler Elementary School third-grade students got to explore the borough municipal complex and a number of various governmental departments during an Oct. 15 field trip. Students heard from borough administration, code enforcement, public works, the treasurer and the fire department.

Borough Manager Glenn Eckhart discussed general government matters including borough council, the mayor, his job, voting and more. He had students sit in for members of council and stressed the importance of bringing concerns to the elected officials.

“Some of the most important decisions are made when someone is brave enough to say no,” Eckhart said during a mock council vote. “Speak up. Don’t be followers.”

Rich Luthcke, zoning officer and code official, told students he makes sure buildings are safe. He detailed aspects of his job including enforcing ordinances, issuing permits, rental inspections and more. Luthcke talked about the importance of zoning rules and showed the students examples of permits and certificates.

Jonathan Reed, Josh Yoo and Dave Whiteman, of the public works department, told students they work to keep the borough as clean as possible and discussed working on the roads, water, sewer, plowing and more. They noted the importance of safety around the big equipment and introduced the different trucks they use.

Borough Treasurer Deanna Decker explained she takes care of all the money for the borough. She noted money comes into the borough from taxes, parking tickets, permits, federal and state grants and more. She also explained the importance of sticking to the budget and working well with others. When Decker asked students what they would spend the money on if they were treasurer, some answers were to make the schools nicer, expand the airport and give money to the homeless.

David Carl discussed how the fire department includes both Catasauqua and North Catasauqua. He explained emergency management, fire police, chief roles, the volunteers and live-in firefighters. Carl added they also respond to emergency medical calls and showed the students the trucks and some other equipment.

After their time at the borough municipal complex, students got to enjoy lunch in the park.
