Zephs look to bounce back

Tanner Dogmanits knew his team would have a stiff challenge with state-ranked Parkland last week.

He gained a better stark reality of the situation with the Zephyrs’ three turnovers that helped Parkland to a 53-7 victory.

“Parkland’s a good team,” said the junior quarterback. “We didn’t play our best with turnovers. We need to have a good week of practice and take away from the mistakes we made.”

The Zephyrs (7-2), who had a six-game winning streak snapped, will look to get back on track when they travel to Allentown’s J. Birney Crum Stadium Friday night for their regular-season finale.

Parkland scored 47 unanswered points after they trailed 7-5, and the Trojans dominated offensively, outgaining the Zephyrs, 447-119 overall, and 307-56 on the ground.

Head coach Andy Marino realized his team didn’t have any answers.

“Parkland played an excellent game,” stated Marino. “We did not play complimentary football in all three phases. We need to focus on more consistent execution this week.”

Talon, Tanner’s older brother, believed the team couldn’t find itself early, and the situation further deteriorated.

“I just think we didn’t play well at all,” deadpanned Talon. “The difference was turnovers. We don’t have many turnovers on the season, but having three in the first half killed us.

The senior wide receiver is confident his team can turn it around against Central Catholic and create some momentum for the district Class 5A playoffs that begin the following week.

“I think if we play our game like we have been doing in the other games this season, we can beat Central. It will be a nice challenge for us to see what type of team we are heading into the postseason.

“This is a big game because you want to go into the playoffs with some momentum. Losing two games in a row would not be ideal going into the playoffs.”

PREDICTION (season record 7-2): Whitehall will look to bounce back, and it won’t be easy. Like Whitehall in 5A, Central has their Class 4A playoff bid locked up. Zephyrs do want to gain some momentum heading into the postseason, and they should have a relatively easy path to another 5A championship. Whitehall will look to strike early here and gain control. When they’re on, Zephyrs can excel in all phases of the game. Look for that to happen here, and head boys’ basketball coach Jeff Jones can pick me up a Wawa Italian hoagie with a soft pretzel ... ZEPHYRS, 28-15.
