LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

WHS football set for District 11 opener

Coming off a 53-7 loss to Parkland that broke a six-game winning streak, Whitehall didn’t want to waste any time getting things arranged back in order against Allentown Central Catholic last week.

The Zephyrs did just that with a convincing, 49-14 victory over the Vikings that raised their record to 8-2.

Now, they have the postseason in their eights, beginning by hosting East Stroudsburg South (2-8) Friday night in a rematch of last year’s District 11 Class 5A championship game, which was won by the Cavaliers, 22-17.

Whitehall will look to keep it going, but they also will have revenge on their minds. The Zephyrs blasted East Stroudsburg South (ESS), 62-21.

“It was huge for us to have a huge game against Central, not only because we didn’t play our best against Parkland, but also it’s the week before playoffs, so it gives us momentum into the playoffs,” said Zephyr’s quarterback Tanner Dogmanits.

“The game with ESS in the beginning of the year has to be out of everyone’s minds on the team because we still remember what the outcome was the last time we played them in the playoffs. They ended our season last year so we would like to do the same to them this year.”

Talon, his brother, cited the team’s overall success, as they won eight or more games in a season for the first time the 2014 team went 9-3 overall. He also doesn’t want to take ESS for granted.

“It’s a big game for us, not only to get into the playoffs, but also to do something that hasn’t been done in 11 years,” said Dogmantis. “I think it’s going to be a much harder game, and we needed to stay focused and locked in at practice all week.”

Head coach Andy Marino was glad to see his club back on track against Central Catholic.

“We ran to the ball and tackled well on defense,” said Marino. “We played assignment sound defense. Offensively, we stayed in manageable situations and played great complimentary football team. Most importantly, we played for each other and wanted to end the regular season on a high note.

“We are excited for the playoffs. We look forward to playing ESS.”

PREDICTION (7-3): Whitehall got back to hitting on all cylinders last week. The only concern here is the Zephyrs coming out overconfident over an East Stroudsburg South team that is a shadow of itself from last season. Good news is the gametime is 6 p.m., so it should be an early night on Mechanicsville Road. More good news is that boys’ basketball coach Jeff Jones can pick me up a WaWa hoagie and a soft pretzel. Basketball season is around the corner.ZEPHYRS, 54-7
