“This is the first of an exciting collaboration with the Da Vinci Science Center,” says Diane Wittry, Allentown Symphony Orchestra (ASO) Music Director and Conductor.
“ASO New Chamber Music Concert: Innovation” is at 7 p.m. Oct. 28, Da Vinci Science Center, Allentown.
Says ASO Composer-in-Residence Clarice Assad, “This season will offer a new kind of listening experience, where each work explores uncharted creative territory, weaving cutting edge technology with acoustic instruments, incorporating electronic soundscapes and visual elements, introducing newly invented instruments and reimagining the concert experience through unconventional formats.”
At the Da Vinci Center, an ASO string quartet, plus percussion and electric bass, will perform innovative compositions by Clarice Assad, English composer Anna Clyne and works by nine regional composers, including Andrew Ardizzoia, Muhlenberg College Associate Professor of Music and Director of Composition and Instrumental Studies, and Sean O’Boyle, Moravian University Artist in Residence.
“This is contemporary chamber music at its most adventurous: a celebration of what happens when tradition meets experimentation,” says Assad.

“This year’s ‘Family Concert’ is really going to be out of this world, with spectacular images of outer space projected onto a huge screen as the band plays an iconic masterwork from the Western Music repertoire,” says Ronald Demkee, Allentown Band Conductor.
The Allentown Band’s “Family Concert: Universe at an Exhibition” is at 2 p.m. Nov. 1, Miller Symphony Hall, Allentown. The concert will be presented to Lehigh Valley school students at 10 a.m. and noon Oct. 31.
“In 2001, after having spent several years designing scientific illustrations for educational purposes, I started experimenting with graphic design, digital photography and Photoshop work to express my interest in astronomy through art,” says Dr. Jose Francisco Salgado, co-founder of KV 265, a non-profit science and arts education organization.
Since 2006, Salgado has collaborated with symphony orchestras, concert bands, composers, electronic and chamber musicians to present science films that evoke curiosity and a sense of wonder about Earth and the universe.
“Universe at an Exhibition” is a synchronized performance of Salgado’s film, accompanied by the Allentown Band’s performing Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky’s classic work “Pictures at an Exhibition.”
Written in 1874 and consisting of 10 movements and two promenades, “Pictures at an Exhibition” is a memorial to Mussorgsky’s friend the artist and architect Viktor Hartmann, who died in 1873. Inspired by an exhibition of Hartmann’s art, each movement of the piano suite is based on works that were on display, some of which are lost.
In 1922, French composer Maurice Ravel adapted the suite for orchestra, which is the most recorded and performed version. The Allentown Band’s transcription is by Paul Lavender.
Salgado is an astronomer and science visualizer at Adler Planetarium, Chicago. His “Science and Symphony” films have been presented more than 90 times in 14 countries with orchestras, including the San Francisco Symphony, Boston Pops, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Czech National Symphony Orchestra.
His films, “Gustav Holst’s The Planets” and “Astronomical Pictures at an Exhibition,” were named by the International Astronomical Union and UNESCO as Special Projects for the International Year of Astronomy in 2009.
Says Demkee, “While this Family Concert is part of the Allentown Band’s education outreach program, it is a concert that can be equally enjoyed by listeners of all ages. Whether an experienced audience or novice listener, this performance can be enjoyable and rewarding for all.”
