LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Letter to The Editor

To the Editor:

Data centers consume significant amounts of electricity and water, raising valid concerns about increased costs, strain on local resources, and negative impacts on quality of life due to noise, light pollution, and water quality.

Fortunately, the current Upper Macungie Board of Supervisors acted responsibly.

On Oct. 2, they took a significant step toward adopting a zoning amendment that will define “Data Center” use, restrict where such facilities can be built, and require detailed studies on noise, water use, water quality, and emergency response.

This balanced proposal preserves local oversight while allowing for responsible growth.

During that same meeting, my opponent advocated for allowing large data centers to be developed “by right,” which would bypass board of supervisors and planning commission reviews as well as public hearings—eliminating the community’s opportunity for input.

Weakening the data center review process is dangerous.

Having completed training in zoning and land development, I understand how complex these issues are and how important it is to protect residents’ interests.

If elected this November, I will continue to support responsible oversight and oppose efforts to relax review requirements.
