HI NEIGHBORS: Planning is underway for the Lehigh Valley’s celebration of the 2026 semiquincentennial – the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Jessica Edris will share the details at the Monday, Oct. 27, session of Hi Neighbors.
The weekly speakers program offered by First Presbyterian Church of Bethlehem, 2344 Center St., Bethlehem, begins with a social time at 9:30 a.m. with the program starting at 10 a.m. All programs are free and there is no registration; all are welcome to attend.

WRITERS GROUP: Greater Lehigh Valley Writers’ Group (GLVWG) will hold its monthly meeting from 10 a.m. – noon on Saturday, Oct. 25. The meeting is offered in a hybrid format – in-person at the Palmer Branch of the Easton Library, 1 Weller Place, Palmer, and online via Zoom.
Membership business will be conducted from 10-11 a.m. From 11 a.m.-noon, author Juilene Osborne-McKnight will present “Goal, Motivation, and Conflict.” Using familiar literary and film examples, this discussion will differentiate goal from motivation and will look at how conflict arises from each. A group workshop exercise that will focus on creating conflict out of goals and/or motivations will follow.

WINDISH ANNIVERSARY: St. Joseph’s Windish Slovenian Roman Catholic Church is celebrating the 108th anniversary of the consecration of the church Tuesday, Oct. 28 with a Mass at 11 a.m. A luncheon at Se-Wy-Co Social Hall, 1 Kenny Headman Lane, Bethlehem, will follow the Mass. The public is invited.

Big Gun Bus Tour. Drive past gun production sites. Arrive Fort Hancock, N.J. to explore the remnants of the Sandy Hook Proving Ground where big gun testing occurred between 1874 and 1919. Among other stops will be Battery Gunnison/New Battery Peck, the most fully restored WWII seacoast artillery battery in the USA, and watch volunteers from the Army Ground Forces Association perform a gun drill see the plotting room, hoisting the ammunition, and the aiming and loading of a M1900 6-inch gun. Other stops: 16-inch gun Battery Lewis, an in-depth tour of the NIKE radar site and a rare look inside Fort Hancock’s historic 1911 water purification plant and pump house (in active use) and its historic Roller-Smith electrical panels built in Bethlehem in the 1930s.
