SHS names student of the week

Q. Please provide the first names of your family members: parents, siblings and pets.

A. My parents’ names are Jaroslaw and Marika Chorwat. I am an only child and currently do not have any pets.

Q. As a senior, do you have any specific goals you will pursue this academic year?

A. As a senior, this year I am focused on maintaining high grades, shooting a flawless target on the rifle team and cutting down my long-distance running times.

Q. What is your favorite class at Salisbury High School? Why?

A. While I cannot single handedly pick a favorite class (since most teachers have done an amazing job and I have learned a wealth of knowledge), this year’s highlights for me would have to be World Cultures and AP Literature. I find World Cultures interesting as history is one of my favorite subjects and it’s fascinating to learn how people lived before modern times. AP Literature is interesting as I like how Dr. Butynskyi structures the class. Everyday in class we learn about something new, diving into short stories or blurbs about texts, then having discussions about them. This makes the class very engaging and exciting to walk into everyday.

Q. Have you received any special awards or recognition?

A. I have been awarded a Varsity letter and pin for the rifle team, as well as Character Athlete of the Week.

Q. Are you involved in any extracurricular activities? How has being involved in these organizations impacted your high school experience?

A. I am involved in riflery, track, National Honor Society, Military History, and Volleyball Club. Involvement in these various organizations has given me a unique high school experience, allowing myself to try new activities I may never have taken up on my own. Ultimately, these organizations have boosted my school spirit and introduced me to many students who I share a bond with over shared passions outside of the organization.

Q. What do you consider your biggest challenge to date?

A. One of my biggest challenges to date has been working on the college process, but not the applications alone. Continuously looking for and finding a school out of the hundreds in Pennsylvania and the thousands in the country, which suit my academic needs and goals, has been an enduring journey into taking a substantial step into my future.

Q. At this time, what are your plans for the future beyond high school?

A. After high school, I plan to attend a 4-year university. I am exploring several majors, as well as schools before making my final decision and narrowing it down to one.

Q. If you could spend an evening conversing with an historically significant person, whom would you choose? Why?

A. If I could spend an evening conversing with a historically significant person, I would choose Jimi Hendrix. I would choose him because it would be interesting to learn how and what inspired him to evolve into such a legendary guitarist. I would ask him how he came up with mind blowing songs such as “Voodoo Child (Slight Return)” and how he managed to revolutionize the electric guitar. I would also be able to see him play firsthand and hear projects he may have been working on, before his career ended.

Q. For what would you like to be remembered?

A. I would like to be remembered as a determined student, a caring friend, an automobile/music enthusiast and discophile.

Q. Do you have any advice for your peers?

A. Study hard, but find a good balance between school and life. Don’t stay locked in your room everyday studying, go out and have some fun. The nights you spend out with your friends will be more memorable than the time spent studying for a test. This doesn’t mean throwing away your homework; have fun, but keep your grades high! In addition, accept any opportunities you’re introduced to. Even if you’re unsure of your performance, liking or the demand of the opportunity, take it. It’s better to try it out and see if you didn’t perform well or didn’t like it than to think “I regret ...”
