Mama’s musings By Lani Goins

Moving pains

I often overthink. This is also accompanied by a tendency to overdo. Sometimes, it isn’t even my intention.

I had a plan for packing and moving, focused of course on the weekends. So far, that plan has been set off course several times. The weekend I intended to do the playroom/storage room, I tackled the desk instead. No problem, there’s time. I resolved to do the playroom the following weekend.

Then my older son said the exterminator was coming, because there was one service left on the contract. OK, no big deal. Boy was I wrong! I came home from work Thursday, to find he had emptied the kitchen and pantry into the dining room.

This made no sense to me. We won’t even be living here in three weeks. And I was saving the aforementioned rooms for last. To cap it all, I had a two-hour work training after work, then my youngest had an activity. So there wasn’t time to do much at all.

I think I have mentioned I am not a morning person by nature. I manage the early morning routine by having everything in its place, not spending time hunting for the sugar, a travel cup lid and my medication. In that lovely search, I managed to drop my phone. So more time was wasted while my youngest called the phone, and I tried to locate the vibration from it in the dining room.

I did eventually find it, but oh my, was I annoyed. Even my youngest, who tends to push my buttons in the morning, gave me plenty of space and was unusually cooperative.

So when I finally found my patience, I decided that at least I can see all the stuff from the cabinets. So I can decide what we really won’t use in the next three weeks. The can opener is not one of those things. That took several minutes to find. Thankfully the next day my older son and I worked opposing shifts. Maybe by the time I see him again, I will feel better.
