Historical figures drop by Lower Macungie Township for tea and conversation

James and Dolley Madison took time from their places in history to be the featured guests at a Sept. 27 tea party hosted at the Camp Olympic Barn, 3120 S. Cedar Crest Blvd., Emmaus.

President James Madison (1751-1836), portrayed by Kyle Jenks and Dolley Madison (1768-1849), interpreted by Elissa Paulissen, enjoyed tea and scones with a sold-out crowd of appreciative history buffs.

The pair, acting in character, fielded questions about their tenure as the fourth President and First Lady of the United States from 1809-1817.

Among his many accomplishments, Madison is famous for his role in drafting and promoting the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

As a founding member of the Democratic-Republican Party, Madison also coauthored the influential “Federalist Papers” with Alexander Hamilton and John Jay.

The two professional historical interpreters have performed together in “James and Dolley: Opposites Attract,” a two-act stage drama Philadelphia-based Jenks wrote.

The afternoon tea was cosponsored by the Lower Macungie Township Historical Society, The Upper Milford Historical Society and the Emmaus Historical Society.
