Hawks aim to reach finals
Bethlehem Catholic kept their undefeated season going with an opening round victory over Northampton in the EPC tournament.
The Hawks (19-0) swept the K-Kids in Saturday’s first round and move on to play Parkland in Tuesday’s semifinals.
Head coach Jess Attieh just wants her group to stay focused on each match at a time, as playing as the favorites is a challenge in itself.
“Our goal going into the tournament is staying focused on what has gotten us here,” said Attieh. “The girls know that every team will raise their level in the postseason, so our mindset is to stay composed, communicate and play for each other.”
Beca defeated Parkland (15-4) early this season, but the Trojans are always a force when it comes to postseason play.
With the Hawks coming into the EPC tournament as the team to beat, Attieh hasn’t let the spotlight take over.
“They understand that being the favorite comes with expectations,” Attieh said, “but they’ve earned that through hard work. This group doesn’t shy away from pressure — they use it as fuel. They respect every opponent, but also have confidence in who they are and how they play together.”
Freedom (16-3) also advanced to the semifinals with a sweep over Pleasant Valley and now face Emmaus (16-3) in the semifinals.
The Hornets knocked off the Pates last month in four games, as the Freedom hopes they can get over the hump.
A possible rematch with Beca in Thursday’s finals could be on the horizon, but there’s one large hurdle for both teams before that with two of District 11’s traditional powers in the way.
