Girls fall in OT; will see Eagles again in districts

Over the past few years, Northampton’s field hockey team has had its share of battles with Nazareth in the regular season and postseason.

This season, the scrip hasn’t changed.

The Konkrete Kids recently suffered a 3-2 loss in overtime to Nazareth in the East Penn Conference (EPC) playoffs, and they will host the Bleu Eagles in the opening round of district play Oct. 21.

In their EPC playoff, the Kids controlled play overall for most of the game, but they couldn’t find the net enough.

“We were dominating in shots and corners,” stated Kids’ head coach Carrie Saul. “We seemed to be control of everything except the scoreboard. We hit the left post, the right post, and the crossbar.”

Northampton did a take a 1-0 lead when Madi Williamson scored on a feed from Grace Roberts before Nazareth tied the game.

The Kids took a 2-1 lead in the closing minute on Lauren Reznick’s goals after Alyssa Chromey sent a long pass down the sideline.

However, the Kids couldn’t hold on for the final 49 seconds when Nazareth tied the game again to send it into the extra session.

“All we had to do was run out the clock,” added Saul. “They applied enough pressure and tried to ram it down our throats.

“There were two goals scored within 29 seconds.”

Nazareth won the coin flip and gained possession in overtime. The Blue Eagles wasted little time and scored the game winner within 90 seconds.

The Kids appeared to have the district third seed, but Southern Lehigh’s upset of Salisbury dropped them to the fourth seed to meet fifth-seed Nazareth again.

During the regular season, the Kids blanked Nazareth, 6-0, on Aug. 27. Northampton finished with a 15-3 mark during the regular season.

In 2023, Northampton edged Nazareth, 2-1, and they suffered a 1-0 defeat to them in 2022, both in district play.

Heading into districts, Williamson has 26 goals and 13 assists, Reznick has 24 goals and two assists, and Roberts has nine goals and 12 assists.

The Kids will scrimmage Southern Lehigh Sept. 21 as a warmup for their district matchup.

“We’ll see them (Nazareth) again, and we’ll know what to expect,” stressed Saul. “We’ll be ready.”
