Brodhead takes first in girls race
Bethlehem Catholic, Freedom, and Liberty harriers competed in their final regular season cross country meet on Oct. 7 at Easton Area High School.
City rivals Freedom and Liberty anticipated a close contest as each would be scored against the other, and it was the Hurricanes who came out on top in girls meet results.
Freedom’s Hannah Brodhead won the girls race in 18:18, and Liberty’s Katie Drabouski placed second in 18:42 followed by teammate Elizabeth McClarin whose time was 18:47.
“I love trail running so much,” said Brodhead. “Trail running is my passion, so right as you hit the mile mark, there was a trail, so my goal was to go out a little more conservative, so when I got to the trail, I would try and push.”
Freedom’s Taylor Vidumsky placed ninth in 20:11, and Liberty took places 13, 18, and 19 with Cali Sobrinski, Remy Weagly, and Lilah McClarin, respectively.
“They’re really important, so it was huge that Cali and Lilah and Remy were able to stay ahead of the Freedom runners,” said Liberty head coach Joseph Spang.
Drabouski felt like she was due for a good race.
“The Easton girls went out really, really fast and started to die off a little bit, so then I was like, OK, I need to follow Elizabeth. She’s not gonna die off, so I stayed with her ... Elizabeth and I separated from the Easton girls and then that last little bit to the finish is when I made a move around Elizabeth,” Drabouski said. “For me, I wanted to see little improvements, things getting a little bit better, like, this is a race I can look back on and be proud ... I’m hoping to go in that right direction.”
The Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Cross Country Meet is scheduled for this week at DeSales University.
