Residents meet the candidates in South Whitehall Township

Ever True Luther Crest Senior Living hosted a nonpartisan “Meet the Candidates” forum Sept. 29.

The free event, open to the public, was moderated by Brad Osbourne, a former South Whitehall Township and Lehigh County Commissioner, as well as longtime host of WGPA 1100 AM’s community radio program Good Morning Lehigh Valley.

Osbourne drew on his experience to guide a fair and informative discussion.

The forum for South Whitehall Township Commissioner candidates highlighted each candidate’s background and platform.

Sharon Fehringer-Ricker, Democrat, emphasized her experience in budget management and community relations.

Glenn Guanowsky, Democrat, highlighted his legal and risk management background.

Monica Hodges, Republican, incumbent, discussed her extensive community involvement and achievements in open space preservation and government transparency.

Chris Peischl, Republican, incumbent, stressed his long-term service in emergency management and the importance of local control over police and fire services.

Key issues discussed included balancing development with community character, supporting an earned income tax referendum for open space preservation and the potential impact of state legislation on local zoning and emergency services.

In their closing statements, Peischl emphasized the importance of local control, proper training and funding for emergency services and the need for proactive decision-making.

Hodges highlighted her dedication to transparency, community engagement and preserving open space, while advocating for continued support.

Guanowsky advocated for responsible development, considering environmental impact and community needs and encouraged greater community involvement in decision-making.

Fehringer-Ricker shared her personal connection to the township and commitment to preserving farmland and open space, emphasizing the importance of trust and integrity in leadership.
