Field hockey team set for EPC tourney

Last Saturday, the Northampton field hockey team took on the 13-3 Bangor Slaters in the final nonconference game for the squad.

Whether it was the early start or the anticipation of Homecoming, the K-Kids went into the half in a scoreless tie with their Colonial League adversaries.

That all turned around in the second half as Northampton turned up the offense and generated 10 corners and three goals to shut out the Slaters 3-0.

Senior Lauren Reznick had a pair of goals and an assist. Reznick assisted on Madi Williamson’s tally and Grace Roberts got the assist on Reznick’s first goal.

Sophomore goalkeeper Kaya Pietryka stopped all 5 Bangor shots that she faced.

“It was the tale of two halves,” explained head coach Carrie Saul. “We knew we had to be more tenacious in the circle. The kids put it together. They got it done. I just had to say (at halftime), ‘I know we can do this. You have to believe it, because right now they want it more than we do.’ Today was a good battle, a really good battle. We’re hungry.”

The K-Kids wrapped up their regular season on Tuesday with a 4-0 win over Whitehall to finish with a 15-3 overall mark and a 10-3 record in conference. It is the best regular season record for Northampton in the EPC era.

While the official EPC tournament bracket had not been released as of the time of this writing, the top 5 teams in the league fell exactly into line with each team having lost to all the teams above them in the standings.

That slots the Kids into the fourth seed where they will host Nazareth in an EPC quarterfinal game on Joan Kremus field on Saturday. Northampton beat the Blue Eagles 6-0 back in August.

A lot has transpired since the second game of the year and Nazareth has narrow losses to Parkland and Emmaus on their resume over the last two weeks to show how far they have come.

The winner gets Emmaus in the semifinals on Tuesday.
