Cazares takes first

Freedom’s boys cross country team hosted the fourth meet of the season on Sept. 30 when the Patriots outscored Pocono Mountain East, 22-36, Pocono Mountain West, 26-31, and Pleasant Valley, 15-50.

Liberty’s Joshua Cazares won the boys race with a time of 17:35.

Freedom’s Brayden Boyle came in second with a time of 18:13, and Pocono Mountain West’s Shawn Belfon placed third with a time of 18:36.

“I thought it would be a good battle with Pocono Mountain West, but he held him off pretty well,” said Freedom coach Bob Thear of Boyle.

Boyle is working his way back from injury.

“I was in second place behind Liberty, but then he started to distance off, and it was expected,” Boyle said. “I was supposed to go race pace today, but I haven’t been feeling amazing endurance-wise just because I haven’t been back for long, and I haven’t done a workout since last track season, but I’m going to start doing workouts this week, so I’m excited.”

Liberty’s Logan Malozi placed fourth in 19:05, and Freedom’s Webb Kurtz came in fifth in 19:08.

“I was just trying to go out and keep a steady pace most of the race,” Kurtz said. “I started out in eighth place and then I kept driving to get past kids. I get a determination at the end to push it and beat the next guy. It motivates me, and it always feels good to beat someone.”

Freedom’s Nick DeVito came in ninth in 19:56.

Liberty’s Seth Pennock was 11th in 20:07, Freedom’s Mikey Messa placed 12th in 20:12, and Liberty’s Riley Kutz was 13th in 20:28.

Bethlehem Catholic’s Matthew Amrick finished in 14th place in 20:32, and Liberty’s Calvin Rittle was 15th in 20:36.

Liberty’s boys defeated Pocono Mountain East, 21-40, Pocono Mountain West, 25-32, and Pleasant Valley, 15-50.
