Brodhead wins

Freedom’s girls cross country team celebrated Senior Night by adding three wins to their record as they recognized seniors Amelia Holden and Molly Parkin.

“They’ve been great,” said Freedom coach Bob Thear. “They’re both really good kids, they’re both good, hard workers, and I made them both co-captains because they set a good example for the other girls. They’re not the fastest, but they’re putting the work in, trying to get better, and helping the team, and that’s very important.”

In team results, the Patriots defeated Pocono Mountain East, 16-46, Pocono Mountain West, 15-50, and Pleasant Valley, 15-50.

Freedom sophomore and first-year harrier Hannah Brodhead won the girls race with a time of 19:06.

Liberty’s Katie Drabouski placed second in 20:39, and teammate Elizabeth McClarin came in third in 20:40.

“I was excited and enjoying it all, and especially it being Senior Night, I was just glad I could help out our team,” Brodhead said. “Katie and Elizabeth were right on me from the start, and last week Elizabeth passed me at the end, so I wanted to make sure that did not happen today, so as soon as I saw them coming up, I tried to push. I wanted to develop a big lead because I know that they’re both incredible sprinters. I would consider myself a pretty decent hill runner, and there’s two hills before you hit the mile mark, and I feel like that was probably where I got the separation.”

Bethlehem Catholic’s Rio Stoudt placed fourth in 20:51, and Freedom’s Taylor Vidumsky placed fifth in 21:47.

“I’ve been pretty consistent in front of Beca all season, but she beat me today, so it was a little rough,” Vidumsky said. “I do not have a good running face at all, and today was bad. After the first race when I beat Rio for the first time, I never thought I could do that, and when I did, it just built up my confidence. Every race, eyes are on her.”

Coach Thear wasn’t concerned with Vidumsky’s placement, however.

“Not every race is going to be your best,” he said. “You’re gonna have some clunkers, but I’d rather have it now than the next three races. The most important ones are coming up. We race Liberty and then leagues and districts. We’re not quite at the fine-tuning stage yet, but we’re not far from now.”

Holden took seventh place with a time of 23:08, and Alexis Bucherer, also from Freedom, was eighth with a time of 23:21.

Liberty’s Remy Weagly came in ninth in 23:45, and teammate Lilah McClarin placed 11th in 24:12.

Freedom’s Ivy Johns was 13th with a time of 24:27, and Parkin came in 20th in 28:55.

Liberty’s girls defeated Pocono Mountain East, 17-45, Pocono Mountain West, 15-50, and Pleasant Valley, 15-50.

Bethlehem Catholic lost to Pocono Mountain East, 50-15, and did not compete against Pocono Mountain West and Pleasant Valley.
